Known for his Philanthropic activities, David Pillai has been touching and transforming lives everywhere: Continuing Anitha’s Legacy.View More
David Pillai, the Chairman and the Founder of Transworld Educare Pvt Ltd is a man who has taken the responsibility to serve the rural and underprivileged communities on his shoulders and has become the epitome of excellence with commitment. Recounting one such benevolent tale of David Pillai is the Legacy Of Anitha.
A cry against discrimination, a rally for social justice and an effort to save Dalit communities from atrocities, David Pillai has always been leading from the front. The tale of Anitha is saddening and will infuriate even those patient minds. On 1 September 2017, a young Shanmugam Anitha decided to commit suicide by hanging. This death created an uproar and was a massive controversy in Tamil Nadu where the National Eligibility and Entrance Test for medical seats were incredibly opposed. She was the reason for this revolution against the system.
S.Anitha (5 March 2000 – 1 September 2017), the ward of a daily wage worker was one of the most stellar students Tamil Nadu has seen. She was from a huge, underprivileged Dalit family in the village of Kuzhumur in the Ariyalur district in Tamil Nadu. Her mother passed away when she was in the 2nd grade. She was raised by her grandmother and called a house that remained dark even during broad daylight her home without the most basic of amenities that we take for granted, not even a toilet.
Anitha did her schooling in a Tamil Medium school and was one of the toppers in her district. She was the only student that scored 100% marks in Physics and Mathematics in the 12th-grade examination in her district. She bagged 1176/1200 in the examination in the Tamil Nadu State Board. Her lifelong ambition was to become a doctor that made a difference.
Anitha was unable to satisfy the requirements and secure admission through the national qualification. She was offered an aeronautical engineering course seat at the Madras Institute of Technology but as her goal was to become a doctor she politely turned down the offer. She would have been the first person from her community in that village to become a doctor. She was the catalyst for the protests for the equality of education for Dalits. A library called, “Dr Anitha Memorial Library'' proudly managed by her brother, Manirathinam.S.A is an ode to her in her village.
With the widespread protests and movements against the countless, unfathomable crimes against the Dalit community, there is a silver lining. Dr David K Pillai, the chairman and founder of the Transworld Group of Companies has been transforming the lives of the underprivileged students that dream of making their mark in the medical field by offering to bear all the expenses for the students to pursue their undergraduate in medicine.
In the first year, students will study on a campus in Mahabalipuram, located in the outskirts of Chennai and then complete the next four years of their course at the Davao Medical School Foundation, in the city of Davao, in the Philippines. Right from securing a passport for the student, bagging a seat to the expenses involved during their time in the country for their education and until they receive their final educational certificate for the course, Transworld guarantees to take care of everything.
Anitha’s sister, S.Soundharya, has already been promised a fully funded medical seat at the Davao Medical school. Soundharya’s life is bound to transform and have a better chance at life.
She would be exposed to opportunities and resources and that might have never come her way and reap laurels from the world of medicine. Soundharya would soon be able to stand on her own and work at any reputed medical organisation anywhere on the planet. She would serve the public and save lives whilst fulfilling her late sister Anitha’s legacy, as well. Soundharya would become one amongst the 4500 students that have already finished their education from the institution and work in the medical field across the globe.
